In just 14 days, Avatar: The Way of Water has sold more than $1 billion in tickets worldwide, making it the fastest movie of 2022 to reach that milestone at the box office. |
Meanwhile,
nine films released in 2019 have crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. The Way
of the Water is the fastest to complete since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home,
which took 12 days. Only six films in history have made $1 billion in their
first two weeks of release.
James Cameron's long-awaited sequel to Avatar opened in mid-December to $134 million in North America and $435 million worldwide, and has remained a huge draw since its release. To date, the Disney and 20th Century Fox film has grossed $317.1 million in North America and $712.7 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $1.025 billion.
Jurassic World overtook Dominion as the second highest-grossing film of the year and is the third-highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.
Avatar 2
seems set for the new year, which is necessary to justify its huge price.
Cameron estimated the $350 million film would need to make nearly $2 billion to
break even, though analysts believe the break-even point is likely closer to
$1.5 billion.
